Chapter 18
Louella
I sat next to Ezal on her cot and combed her hair. Iveta and I had given her a sponge bath to help clean her up, but the arm and leg still gave her pain when moved too much. It was midday now, and I knew I needed to head back to get some rest, as I had been up for nearly two days now. But it didn’t feel right to leave Ezal like this when it was my fault. Not to mention the news that Regan had dropped on Ezal before he’d left earlier.
I couldn’t believe she was with child. She was barely older than I was, and with the problems with her limbs, it all just added to my worry for my friend. I finished combing her hair, and she moved to lay back down. I got up quickly and helped her to a comfortable position.
“Mistress, you need to get some rest as well, or you’re going to start to look like me,” Ezal said and glanced at her arm.
I smiled and moved the covers up some. “Already making jokes about it, are you?” I asked.
“You know I always look at the bright side of things. Now, when a merchant says it costs an arm and a leg, I can say ‘take ’em,’” Ezal said with a smile.
“Ha-ha, true enough!” I laughed and agreed.
Iveta came into the room at that moment and made her way over to us. When she was close enough, she looked at Ezal and said, “Alright, girl, I sent the letter for you. The fact that he gave you that seal means he was serious, right?”
“I hope so,” Ezal said with a happy yet slightly sad smile.
I grabbed Ezal’s hand and said, “If I had known how serious you guys had gotten, I would have been more forceful about you going with him.”
“It’s ok. He is a marquis. I was afraid I would cause him problems being by his side. Not to mention, you are my friend before you are my mistress,” Ezal replied as she patted my hands.
We chatted a bit more after that before I glanced out the window and saw that it was getting late in the afternoon. I had a stop to make before I went home, so I needed to leave. Ezal was getting pretty tired anyway, so this was a good time to excuse ourselves. Iveta and I left the ward, and when we got to the street, I turned toward Regan’s tower.
We got there after several minutes of walking, and I noticed one of the golems was missing. I paid it little heed and went inside. The remaining golem nodded to me, as the two that guarded the tower knew me by now. Once inside I asked Iveta to wait on the first floor for me and made my way up to Regan’s sitting room floor. Once there I sat at the big table and rested my head in my hands.
This event had shown me just how weak I was and how much I relied on the people around me.
